1. Introduction
The goals of the postgraduate programs at the LNM Institute of Information Technology, Jaipur are: The development of scientific and engineering manpower of the highest quality; to cater to the needs of industry, R & D organizations and educational institutions; a broad grasp of the fundamental principles of the sciences and the scientific method; a deep understanding of the area of specialization; an innovative ability to solve new problems; and, a capacity to learn continually and interact with multidisciplinary groups. Above all, the students should have a capacity for free and objective enquiry and be aware and sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the society. With these goals in view, the postgraduate programs are designed to include courses of study, seminars and project/thesis through which a student may develop his/her concepts and intellectual skills.
2. Guidelines for the Postgraduate Programs
2.1. Postgraduate Degrees
The institute currently offers the following three postgraduate degrees:
M.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE); Computer Science Engineering (CSE); and, Communication and Computer Engineering (CCE).
2.2. Eligibility for Admission
Candidates for M.Tech program should have a valid Gate Score with a first class undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
The candidates for MS (By Research) program should have a first class Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Usually the LNM scholars, employed in the Institute, are considered for this program.
Candidates for PhD program should have preferably a master level degree in relevant discipline. However, in exceptional cases, a candidate with an undergraduate degree may also be admitted to this program.
2.3. Admission Procedure
We accept applications for the above mentioned programs throughout the year. The applications are short listed based on the number of available seats and the quality of applications. The short listed candidates are offered admission based on a written test and/or personal interview.
Candidates may be offered admission at any time of the year. However, formal registration is done at the beginning of a regular semester.
2.4 Curriculum:
For MTech, the first year is course based while the second year is for the thesis work.
The research oriented MS and PhD programs are designed on an individual basis, keeping in view of the weakness of the candidate and the requirements of the program.
2.5 Evaluation:
In case of MTech program, the candidates will be evaluated based on their performance in the courses and the thesis work will be continuously supervised by the supervisor(s).
In case of MS and PhD candidates, there will be a institute level Research Committee. This committee will evaluate the research problem proposed by the candidate and will give necessary suggestions. Besides other members, the committee will also have the candidate’s supervisor as a member.
For each MS and PhD candidate, there will also be a Research Progress Committee proposed by the supervisor and approved by the Dean Academic. The committee will consist of the supervisor(s) and at least one more faculty member of the institute. This committee will examine the progress of the candidate at least two times a semester. Based on the progress made by the candidate, the committee will advise, give warning, or recommend termination from the program. This committee will also determine when adequate research work has been done by the candidate. After this, the student will submit the thesis along with a synopsis of the research work done by the candidate.
2.6 Thesis Examination:
In case of MTech candidate, the thesis will be examined by the supervisor of the thesis and one more examiner, from the LNMIIT, appointed by the chairman AC.
In case of MS candidate, the thesis will be examined by the Research Progress Committee and one more examiner, from LNMIIT, appointed by the chairman AC.
In case of PhD candidate, the thesis will be examined by the Research Progress Committee and at least two examiners from outside the institute (preferably one from within the country and other from abroad), appointed by the Chairman AC.
Examiners can accept the thesis or advise for modification or can reject the thesis.
2.7 Oral Examination:
After the thesis has been approved by the thesis examiners, the oral examination shall be conducted as follows:
The oral examination of MS and MTech candidates will be conducted by a committee consisting of the supervisor(s) and one more faculty member of the Institute. This committee will be appointed by the chairman AC.
The oral examination of PhD students will be conducted by a committee consisting of the supervisor(s), one faculty from the institute, and one of the thesis examiners. This committee will be appointed by the chairman AC.
2.8 Financial Assistance:
Students of the MTech program are eligible to get a scholarship of Rs. 7000/- per month for a total duration of two years. After two years, the scholarship can be further extended for three more months, if supervisor recommends the case and Chairman AC approves the same.
Candidates under MS and PhD program are eligible for a financial support in the range of Rs 10,000/- to Rs 15,000/- per month, based on the qualifications of the candidate. In case of MS candidates, typically this support is available for a total duration of three years. In case of PhD candidate, the support is available for four years. On the recommendations of the thesis supervisor, Chairman AC can extend the duration of financial support by six month in case of MS candidates and by one year in case of PhD candidates.
2.9 Leave Rules: Normally, the candidates admitted in any PG program can be granted exigency work leave for 15 days during two regular semesters in a year. Further, 15 more days leave can be given during the vacation period. Candidates can also be granted medical leave of 8 days per semester.
Besides, this leave, candidates can avail more leaves if the same is required for academic work, such as attending seminars, data collection, some short terms course etc.
Any other leave may entail financial loss to the candidate.
