There is general consensus that future optical networks are demanding for 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE). The jump toward 100GbE must take care of cost and power consumption aspects determined by physical, technological issues of a 100 Gbit/s transmission. Electronic components and ICs are pushed to their limitation in terms of bandwidth and power requirement and, at the same time, photonic processing is still in its early stage.
