The students leave the safe haven of their homes to pursue their academic dreams when they enter an educational institution. They are enthusiastic, curious, at the same time nervous and apprehensive about their new surroundings. They find themselves in a competitive academic environment full of challenges and obstacles with little family support or social environment to fall back on. Counseling provides the much needed caring and empathetic listening to the young individuals.
The basic objective is to provide a platform to the students where they can come and be gradually helped with their problems. Often the biggest problem is helping the students identify the problem itself. Having done this, the counselor builds up on the rapport established and collaboratively helps the student take responsibility of the situation. Without being critical, the idea is to involve the students and assist them in their own healing and harmonious living. The counseling provided can be academic, emotional or a combination of the two.
