We are looking at the following possible engagements:
1. A one-day visit on a weekday, where the person gives a seminar to the students
at large on a common interest topic, or gives a guest lecture in a specific course.
Of course, the person also interacts with other faculty members, and we can exchange
ideas on various issues.
It is normally expected that the company will bear the cost of travel in such a
situation, as they will treat this as helping an educational institution. We will
take care of local hospitality and all arrangements. (But in some cases, we do pay
for travel of the visitor too.)
2. A 2-day visit over a weekend, where the person may give some sort of workshop,
or a series of lectures on some topics. Note that the topics are not necessarily
technology related only. It could be a workshop on soft skills, for example. But
we are expecting a deeper engagement in this model, compared to the first one.
In this case, it will be possible to take care of some costs - whether personal
honorarium or travel or both. We normally keep a budget of Rs 30,000 for each such
activity.
3. A one-week visit, including 2 weekends. We have the flexibility of offering a
1-credit course, which includes 10 lectures, and someone from industry can do this.
It can be combined with the family vacation at Jaipur. They could offer lectures
8-10 AM or 5-7 PM every day, go around the city for the remaining time. Do this
for 5 days, take an exam on the 6th day, and submit just the pass/Fail grade (no
need to distinguish between A, B, C, D, etc.).
We will be happy to offer a suitable honorarium, and family accommodation in the
guest house, in addition to providing a car for the entire week. We normally keep
a budget of Rs 60,000 for each such course.
4. Visiting faculty position in which the person visits the campus most of the weekends
(about 12-13 weekends out of 18 weeks in the semester - since some will have holidays,
etc.). It is expected that the person will visit us every Friday and Saturday, and
teach 1.5 to 2 hours on every day, a total of 40-42 lectures in the semester. Remaining
time every weekend could be used for preparation, grading, student interaction,
projects, etc.
This is specifically targeted at people working in National Capital Region, because
we are just 4 hours away by car or train. We may not be able to afford to pay air
fare every week for the course. We provide an honorarium of about Rs. 2 lakhs and
travel expense, and also provide free lodging and boarding to the visiting faculty.
We have once in a while got faculty from places which are linked by overnight train
- like Bhopal, Ahmadabad, etc., but because there is not much industry in most such
places, our focus has been NCR region only.
5. A full time engagement for the semester. In this case, the person either takes
leave for 4 months (very few companies permit this), or resigns a job, and gives
a joining date to the next company after 4 months. Surprisingly, we have been receiving
lots of emails from people who after 20+ years in industry want to experience teaching.
They think that they must do all types of things in life, and without having the
teaching experience, life is incomplete. They are not interested in a full time
career in academics. The other reason they quote is that they want to de-stress
themselves, and our campus is a perfect place to do that. It is a beautiful campus
in the middle of hills, with no human inhabitation in the immediate vicinity of
the campus.
Of course, they can explore the whole of Rajasthan in a semester by going on weekend
trips to various cities and areas. Whatever be the reasons for people to come to
us, we welcome this whole-heartedly. These people, since they are for only one semester,
are not given any significant administrative role, nor do they guide projects, theses,
etc. They also do not have other engagements like sponsored projects, etc. In such
a situation, we believe that to keep themselves busy for the whole day, they should
normally teach two courses. (And this is the problem in most cases. If people have
not been involved in R&D, the only thing they can offer to teach is Software Engineering,
which they can do very well given the practical experience that they have had. But
we do want them to teach two courses. And we can't have everyone from industry teaching
Software Engineering only.)
To such people, we offer a compensation package of about Rs. 4 lakhs plus two way
travel to family, and guest house AC accommodation for the semester.
6. And finally, if someone wants to shift to academic career full time on a permanent
basis, we would be happy to consider such cases as well. Of course, in these cases,
the academic record should be good, pedigree should be good, and the work should
have had some R&D content.
Note:
We are not just looking at people in Computer Science, but also in Electronics,
Communication, and also in humanities and social sciences.
